Frequently asked questions about
PROLASTIN-C LIQUID

PROLASTIN-C LIQUID is augmentation therapy for treatment of adults with clinical evidence of emphysema due to severe hereditary deficiency of alpha1-proteinase inhibitor. PROLASTIN-C LIQUID has been proven to effectively raise the levels of the alpha1-antitrypsin protein in your blood. It comes in a ready-to-use, concentrated form of alpha1-antitrypsin protein.2

PROLASTIN-C LIQUID is the same medicine you have been receiving in a lyophilized (powder) formulation, but is now available in a convenient, ready-to-infuse liquid formulation.2 Since PROLASTIN-C LIQUID is ready to use, it no longer needs to be mixed by you or your nurse prior to infusion. You will still have access to the same PROLASTIN DIRECT program Patient Service Coordinator and the same AlphaNet Coordinator you have been working with and have come to rely on since your first PROLASTIN-C refill.

There are two ways to obtain PROLASTIN-C LIQUID, both of which require your doctor to send in a new prescription specifically for the liquid formulation to Dohmen, the only specialty pharmacy that fills and ships PROLASTIN-C LIQUID prescriptions. You can:

  1. Call Dohmen and ask them to contact your doctor to obtain a new prescription for PROLASTIN-C LIQUID. Your PROLASTIN DIRECT team at Dohmen is available and ready to help.
  2. Wait for your current prescription to be renewed. At that time, Dohmen will work directly with your doctor to obtain a new prescription for PROLASTIN-C LIQUID. Until then, you will continue to receive the PROLASTIN-C lyophilized (powder) formulation you are currently receiving.

PROLASTIN-C LIQUID is only distributed by Dohmen Life Science Services (Dohmen). Dohmen is the only specialty pharmacy that fills and ships PROLASTIN-C LIQUID prescriptions, and manages the PROLASTIN DIRECT program. Once the PROLASTIN DIRECT team receives your prescription from your doctor, you will receive a phone call within 24 hours. Your caller ID may display "Unknown Caller," "Unavailable Caller," or "800-305-7881." It is important you answer the phone so they can walk you through the process, explain your benefits, and answer any of your questions.

PROLASTIN-C LIQUID is shipped directly from the specialty pharmacy, Dohmen, in refrigerated packs. PROLASTIN-C LIQUID should be stored in the refrigerator at 36-46oF (2-8oC) for the period indicated by the expiration date on its label. It may be stored at room temperatures not exceeding 77oF (25oC) for up to one month, after which the product must be used or immediately discarded. Do not freeze.

No, the PROLASTIN-C LIQUID vial stopper is latex free.

You can take comfort in knowing that the PROLASTIN DIRECT program works directly with your insurance company to secure and coordinate your infusion location. This may be at home, at work, at an infusion center, or even when you are traveling. If you receive your infusions at home, your PROLASTIN-C LIQUID will be delivered directly to your home prior to your appointment with your infusion nurse. If you go to an infusion center, your PROLASTIN-C LIQUID will be waiting for you when you get there.

PROLASTIN-C LIQUID involves a weekly infusion that takes approximately 15 minutes when given at the recommended rate of 0.08 mL/kg/min.2

The PROLASTIN DIRECT program is a comprehensive patient support program that provides you with a team dedicated to alpha-1 care, who will assist you with securing insurance coverage, coordinating infusions, and connecting you to AlphaNet®.

Dohmen Life Science Services (DLSS, or Dohmen) is a specialty pharmacy, and is the only pharmacy that fills and ships PROLASTIN-C LIQUID prescriptions. Dohmen also manages the PROLASTIN DIRECT® program.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

PROLASTIN®-C LIQUID is an alpha1-proteinase inhibitor (human) (alpha1-PI) indicated for chronic augmentation and maintenance therapy in adults with clinical evidence of emphysema due to severe hereditary deficiency of alpha1-PI (alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency).

Limitations of Use

  • The effect of augmentation therapy with any alpha1-PI, including PROLASTIN-C LIQUID, on pulmonary exacerbations and on the progression of emphysema in alpha1-PI deficiency has not been conclusively demonstrated in randomized, controlled clinical trials
  • Clinical data demonstrating the long-term effects of chronic augmentation or maintenance therapy with PROLASTIN-C LIQUID are not available
  • PROLASTIN-C LIQUID is not indicated as therapy for lung disease in patients in whom severe alpha1-PI deficiency has not been established

PROLASTIN-C LIQUID is contraindicated in immunoglobulin A (IgA)-deficient patients with antibodies against IgA or patients with a history of anaphylaxis or other severe systemic reaction to alpha1-PI products.

Hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, may occur. Monitor vital signs and observe the patient carefully throughout the infusion. If hypersensitivity symptoms occur, promptly stop PROLASTIN-C LIQUID infusion and begin appropriate therapy.

Because PROLASTIN-C LIQUID is made from human plasma, it may carry a risk of transmitting infectious agents, eg, viruses, the variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) agent, and, theoretically, the Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) agent. This also applies to unknown or emerging viruses and other pathogens.

The most common adverse reactions during PROLASTIN-C LIQUID clinical trials in >5% of subjects were diarrhea and fatigue, each of which occurred in 2 subjects (6%).
